McCloud Lake Fishout July 13, 2019
Fishmaster: Tom Taylor Phone: 515-0494 Email: [email protected]
Time: 8:30 a.m. There are normally several boats on the lake by 7:00 in summer.
Meeting Place: Parking lot / boat launch at McCloud Lake
Directions: Take 5 north for about an hour. Take Hwy. 89 offramp to McCloud (just before the first Mount Shasta exit, and after the Mott Rd. exit) and drive to the town of McCloud (about 10 miles). Turn right at Squaw Creek Rd and follow it for 10 miles until you come to the lake. Stay left and follow the north shore of the lake for a half mile until you reach the parking area. Count on at least a 1 ½ hour drive to get there from Redding.
Targeted Species: Rainbow and Brown Trout
Equipment: 4 – 6 wt. rod. Floating line with 9 foot leader and 5x to 6x tippet to use with dry flies or indicators. You might also want sink tip line with straight leader for stripping streamers, or a full sink for trolling.
Flies: Your favorite lake flies – include small midges, wooly buggers in black and olive, Eagle buggers in bright orange and purple, flying ants, and hoppers. Also bring standards like PT, Hare’s ear, Prince, Birds Nest, Adams.
Note: You’ll be happiest fishing this lake if you bring some sort of watercraft. There are long arms best reached by motorboat, but the area within a ¼ mile of the launch ramp can easily be fished with a kayak, pram, pontoon boat, or float tube. You can also fish from the bank near the launch ramp. Because the lake is full this summer, most of the banks are too steep to negotiate on foot.
Lunch: There is no place near to buy food, so please bring whatever lunch and drinks you want. We can gather around noon to eat, if everyone would like. Please sign up or notify the fish master if you plan to attend.
